Women's Literacy, Education, and Empowerment

At Nirantar, we believe that education, literacy and empowerment are closely linked.

Mainstream literacy efforts often seek to make women better mothers and more responsible citizens; whereas Nirantar promotes literacy which not only has, at its centre, women themselves, but also their rights, needs and interests, including the pleasure of reading and engaging with a world beyond one’s own.

Nirantar plays the role of a resource organisation and our mandate is to strengthening the dimension of women’s empowerment, pushing for more women-centric strategies like residential camps, and for ‘thematic literacy’ in this process. Thematic literacy assumes importance in a context where usual literacy material is unable offer the opportunity for learners to be using the skills learnt in real-time as they are acquiring them.
