Nirantar's work aimed at women involves literacy as well as education defined more broadly as structured learning that is empowering. We enable women to have access to literacy opportunities through capacity building of organizations that want to start literacy work as well directly through its field based programme. Nirantar's work in women's education includes curriculum development and publication of books on women's journeys with education.

Building Capacities and Advocating for Women's Literacy

Nirantar enters into intensive partnerships with NGOs and community based programmes who aim to embark upon empowering literacy programmes for women. The capacity building involves a series of trainings and field visits to the partner organisation. Nirantar has created a range of educational materials for teachers as well as learners. Nirantar also advocates for government-sponsored adult literacy policies and programmes to be empowering and effective.

Educational Materials for Women's Education

Nirantar works on issues of women’s education, other than literacy. This work focuses on creating a range of materials in Hindi, including curricula for use by trainers and staff of community-level groups, such as on issues of health and micro credit; books on women’s education such as on Pandita Ramabai, the 19th century feminist educationist and on Muslim women’s education; as well as readers consisting of critical works in Gender and Education translated into Hindi.

Sahjani Shiksha Kendra, a community based programme

Nirantar works with women at the community level in Lalitpur District of Uttar Pradesh through its Sahjani Shiksha Kendra programme, to promote literacy, women’s collectives and access to entitlements such as NREGA. Nirantar is enabling processes whereby the Sahjani Shiksha Kendra can become an independent organisation in the future.
