Introduction

Nirantar is grounded in the women’s movement. We focus on education as a feminist issue and we believe concerns central to the women’s movement must find a place within our work on education as well. We have engaged with various women’s rights issues, the rights of same sex-desiring and transgender people, the rights of the rural poor to entitlements such as the right to work as well as other struggles. Nirantar has also been involved in other democratic rights movements and struggles against communalism. Our activism has been located in Delhi as well as in Lalitpur District of Uttar Pradesh, where our community-based programme Sahjani Shiksha Kendra is located. The forms of activism have ranged from protests to engagement with law reform processes.
